Flat Rate vs Per Ton Pricing Explained

When you shop for a ductless mini split installation in Central Texas, you will usually see two pricing styles: flat rate and per ton (or per BTU). Flat rate means you pay one set price for the whole job. Per ton means the price changes based on how much cooling power you need. Each has its place. We want you to know the difference so you can choose what fits your project best.

At Jester Climate, we use a flat rate of $2,400 for a standard installation. That covers all materials and labor. No guessing, no hidden fees. You know the price before we start. And once a week on Joker Day, the price is even lower. But the exact Joker Day figure changes weekly, so you will need to check our homepage for that deal.

How Per Ton Pricing Works

Per ton pricing is common in the HVAC world. A ton of cooling is equal to 12,000 BTUs per hour. So a 2 ton system would be 24,000 BTUs. Contractors set a price per ton. For example, if a company charges $1,200 per ton and you need a 2 ton system, the base price would be $2,400. But that per ton rate often covers only the equipment and basic labor. Additional costs like line sets, electrical work, or mounting hardware can be added on top.

In Central Texas, where summer heat is intense, homes often need multiple zones. A 3 zone system might be 3 tons total. With per ton pricing, the cost goes up linearly. This can be fair if your system is very large or complex. But it also means the final bill depends on the exact tonnage and any extras. You might not know the total until after the contractor does a full load calculation.

Why Flat Rate Can Be Simpler for Mini Splits

Ductless mini splits are different from central air. They are modular. A standard residential installation for a single zone or even a multi zone system often falls within a predictable range of labor and materials. That is why Jester Climate offers a flat rate of $2,400 for a standard install. Materials like the condenser, indoor unit, mounting bracket, line set, and basic electrical are included. Labor is included too.

Flat rate removes the guesswork. You do not need to worry about the installer adding surprise charges for “extra” BTUs or “oversized” line sets. If your install is truly standard, the price is the price. For homes in Austin or Round Rock with typical wall construction and accessible mounting locations, this flat rate works very well. It also makes budgeting easier, especially when you are replacing an old window unit or adding cooling to a converted garage.

When Per Ton Might Be Better (And When Flat Rate Wins)

Let us be honest. Per ton pricing can be better for very large systems or custom commercial work. If you need a 5 ton ducted system or a mini split with extra long line runs, a per ton quote lets the contractor account for the true cost of materials. In those cases a flat rate might be too low or too high. But for most residential ductless mini split installations in Central Texas, a flat rate is the fairest and most transparent option.

Flat rate wins when the job is standard. It wins when you want to avoid the stress of a fluctuating estimate. It also wins when you compare it to a per ton price that does not include everything. Some contractors list a low per ton price but then add fees for the indoor unit, the line set cover, or the disconnect switch. With Jester Climate, the $2,400 flat rate includes those items. The only extra is the $400 deposit to book your install day. The remaining $2,000 is due after you see the system running and are happy.

Common questions

Flat Rate vs Per Ton Pricing Explained, answered

Is the $2,400 flat rate for any size mini split?

The $2,400 flat rate covers a standard installation for a typical residential ductless mini split system. Standard means up to a certain capacity and one outdoor unit with up to four indoor units. If you need a very large system or a complex install with long line sets or special electrical work, we will provide a custom quote. But for the vast majority of Austin area homes, the flat rate applies. Call us to confirm if your project qualifies.

How does the Joker Day pricing work?

One day each week is Joker Day. On that day, the price for a standard installation is lower than $2,400. The exact dollar amount changes every week. We post the current Joker Day price on our homepage. You can book that day and pay the lower price. The deposit and balance terms are the same. The Joker Day price is a limited offer, so check the site to see this week's deal.

Will I know the final price before work starts?

Yes. The $2,400 flat rate (or the Joker Day price if applicable) is the total for materials and labor. After we confirm your install is standard, you pay a $400 deposit to reserve your date. The remaining balance is due after the system is installed and running, and you have seen it work. There are no surprise charges. If the installer discovers something non standard during the visit, we will discuss any changes with you before proceeding.

What if I need a larger system or multiple zones?

The $2,400 flat rate covers up to four indoor units on one outdoor unit, with standard line set lengths. If you need a larger capacity or more zones, we can still give you a flat price quote. It just may be a custom quote rather than the standard flat rate. Per ton pricing might be used for that custom quote, but we will explain it clearly. The goal is to keep things simple and fair.
