BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and it is a measure of cooling power. For a garage, the number depends on three main things: the size of the space, how well it is insulated, and what you plan to do in there. We will walk you through each one so you can talk to your installer with confidence.
The quick rule of thumb for Central Texas is about 20 BTUs per square foot for a garage with average insulation. A one car garage is often around 250 to 300 square feet, so you would be looking at a 6,000 to 7,000 BTU unit. A two car garage is usually 400 to 500 square feet, which points to a 9,000 to 12,000 BTU mini split.
But that is just a starting point. Garage ceilings can be higher than standard 8 foot ceilings, and if your garage has tall ceilings or is a converted space with a loft, you may need to add 10 to 20 percent more BTUs. Always measure the actual cubic feet, not just floor area, when you are sizing.
Garages are notorious for poor insulation. Many have uninsulated walls, thin metal doors, and no insulation in the ceiling. If your garage is basically a tin can in the Texas summer, you might need to bump up the BTU estimate by 30 percent or more. On the other hand, if you have already added foam insulation, sealed the gaps, and put in a good garage door, you can stick closer to the 20 BTU per square foot rule.

If you are exercising or running power tools, you generate extra heat and humidity. That means you need a larger unit or at least one with good dehumidification. For a workshop where you spend several hours at a time, consider moving up one size from the basic square footage calculation.
Also think about how often you will use the space. If you only need it cool a few times a year for a weekend project, a smaller unit that runs longer might be fine.
