A mini split is an efficient way to cool and heat a room or an entire house. But it does need power. The good news is that most homes in our area already have what it takes. We handle the wiring and connection as part of our flat rate installation. Here is a straightforward look at the electrical requirements for a typical mini split system.

Voltage and Amperage: The Basics

Most standard mini split systems for homes in Central Texas run on 208/230 volts. This is the same voltage that powers your clothes dryer or electric oven. A typical single zone system draws between 6 and 15 amps depending on the size of the unit. That is less than a microwave or a hair dryer.

Larger multi zone systems with multiple indoor heads may require more amperage. But we always check your existing electrical panel to make sure there is space and capacity. If your panel is full or outdated, we will let you know plainly before any work begins.

The Disconnect Box and Conduit

Every outdoor mini split unit needs a disconnect box within sight of the unit. This is a safety switch that lets a technician turn off power for service. It is required by code in most areas including Austin. We install a weatherproof disconnect box as part of our standard installation.

From the disconnect box, we run a conduit with the appropriate gauge wire to the outdoor unit. The indoor unit gets its power from the outdoor unit through a communication cable. No extra power is needed inside the room. That is one reason mini splits are so clean and flexible. You do not need to run a new circuit inside your wall to each head.

What We Handle and What You Should Check

Our flat installation price includes all electrical work from your main panel to the mini split. That means the breaker, the wire, the disconnect box, and the connections. We handle the permit if one is required. Permit rules vary by city. We take care of that so you do not have to.

Before we arrive, you can check a few things. Make sure there is an open space in your breaker panel for a new double pole breaker. If your panel is old or full, that may add cost. Also, the outdoor unit needs to be within a reasonable distance of the panel. If the run is very long, there may be an extra charge for additional wire. We will quote that before you commit. No surprises.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for a mini split?

Yes. A mini split needs its own dedicated circuit with its own breaker in your electrical panel. This is for safety and to keep the unit from tripping other circuits. We install that as part of our standard flat rate. The breaker is typically a double pole 15 or 20 amp breaker for most single zone systems.

Can my existing electrical panel handle a mini split?

In most Austin area homes built in the last 40 years, the answer is yes. A typical 200 amp panel has plenty of room for a 15 amp mini split circuit. If you have an older 100 amp panel or a panel that is already full, we can tell you during our site check. Sometimes a sub panel or a panel upgrade is needed. We will explain that honestly before you decide.

Does the indoor unit need its own electrical outlet?

No. The indoor unit gets its power from the outdoor unit through a communication cable. You do not need an electrician to add an outlet near the indoor head. That is part of why mini splits are less invasive than window units or central air. The only power connection is at the outdoor unit and the main panel.

Is a mini split more efficient than a window unit?

In general, yes. A mini split uses inverter technology to vary its speed instead of cycling on and off. That uses less electricity overall and keeps the temperature more steady. A window unit is cheaper upfront and easier to install yourself. But if you want quieter operation and lower electric bills over time, a mini split is usually the better choice. Both have their place.
