Dedicated Circuits for a Garage Mini Split
A mini split compressor starting in a garage that is already well over 100 degrees will not play nice with a garage door opener motor or a freezer compressor on the same wires. That load needs its own circuit from the panel.
You know the garage. Rack in the corner, plates stacked, maybe a fan blowing air that feels like a hair dryer by two in the afternoon. Past 110 degrees on a bad stretch along I-35 and the space is done for training. A mini split can make it usable again, but the outdoor unit is a real motor load. It needs clean power that does not sag when the compressor kicks.
We run a dedicated circuit for that unit. It does not share a breaker with lights, the door opener, a freezer, a welder, or a battery charger. The startup surge on a compressor is short but heavy. Two motor loads hitting at once drop voltage and trip breakers or stress control boards.
The outdoor unit also gets a disconnect right next to it and a short whip into its electrical compartment. That is the electrical package for a garage job. The indoor heads usually take power from the outdoor unit through the line set cable. A site visit confirms the panel, the route, and the exact unit the garage can hold.

Most units that can cool a garage training space run on 240 volts. The breaker and the wire size follow the nameplate on the condenser we actually set. A general rule of thumb is that a unit sized for a typical one or two car garage still wants its own two pole breaker and a dedicated homerun. We do not share an existing garage receptacle circuit. The site visit is what confirms the load and the panel space.
From the panel we pull new cable or we run conduit, whichever fits the path. The run can go through the attic, along the eave, or down an exterior wall to the pad or the wall bracket. We support it, we protect it where a jack or a bumper could hit it, and we land it at a disconnect within sight of the outdoor unit.

Why the door opener and a freezer stay off that circuit
A garage door opener is a motor. It surges when you hit the button. A mini split compressor surges when the thermostat calls. If they share a circuit and they start together, voltage dips. Lights flicker. The opener may reverse or stop. The mini split may throw a communication error or just fail to start. Over months the extra heat in the breaker and the contacts adds wear.
A chest freezer in the same garage is the same story. Its compressor cycles whenever the box warms up. On a hot afternoon both compressors can decide to start within seconds of each other. That is a classic nuisance trip or a brownout. The freezer may be on a separate receptacle today. We still keep the mini split on its own homerun so neither load bothers the other.
The disconnect next to the outdoor unit
We mount a weatherproof disconnect beside the condenser, close enough that you can see the unit while you operate the switch. You can kill power right there to clean the coil, check the fan, or work on the electrical compartment without walking back to the main panel. The enclosure is built for outdoor use and we keep the cover closed and latched.
From the load side of that disconnect we run the whip. The whip is short. It is flexible so the unit can sit on a pad or hang on a bracket without a rigid conduit fighting every vibration. We use liquidtight flexible conduit or the equivalent that belongs outdoors, with the right fittings and a drip loop so water does not follow the wires into the disconnect or the unit.
Landing the whip and finishing the circuit
The whip enters the outdoor unit through a knockout with a proper connector. We land the conductors on the terminal block the manufacturer provided, torque them, and we land the ground. Strain relief keeps the whip from pulling on the terminals. If the unit is on a wall bracket we still keep the whip short and supported so it does not sag into the fan or the coil.
Inside the garage the indoor heads hang or mount where the training layout allows. Their power and communication usually ride the same cable that carries the refrigerant lines. We do not add a second house circuit for the heads unless the equipment actually requires it. Everything electrical for the split is confirmed on the visit before we pull wire.
Questions People Ask
Can I plug a mini split into the existing garage outlet?
No. That circuit already feeds lights, the door opener, and often a freezer or charger. The compressor surge on a mini split will trip the breaker or drop voltage for everything else on the run. We install a new dedicated circuit from the panel sized to the outdoor unit.
Why does the outdoor unit need its own disconnect?
So you can shut power off at the condenser without going back to the main panel. You use it when you clean the coil, service the fan, or open the electrical compartment. We put a weatherproof disconnect within sight of the unit and run a short whip from there into the condenser.
What is a whip on a mini split?
The whip is the short flexible conduit and wires between the disconnect and the outdoor unit. It carries line voltage and ground. Flexibility lets the condenser sit on a pad or a bracket without a rigid pipe transmitting vibration or getting yanked if the unit is ever moved a few inches.
Will a shared circuit just trip sometimes or will it damage things?
Both can happen. Repeated voltage sag and extra heat at the breaker wear contacts. Control boards on the opener and the mini split do not like brownouts. A freezer compressor that cannot start properly can overheat. Dedicated circuit removes those two motor loads from each other.
Does the indoor head need a separate circuit in the garage?
Usually no. Power for the indoor unit typically comes from the outdoor unit through the interconnect cable that runs with the line set. The dedicated circuit we pull is for the condenser. The site visit confirms the exact power arrangement for the equipment that fits your garage.
