Cooling a Garage Golf Simulator

A golf simulator only works in a dark garage, so the door stays down. Trapped summer heat plus a projector lamp is why the bay gets brutal while you practice.

You already know the kit. A hitting mat, a net or an impact screen, a projector aimed at that screen, a launch monitor, and a PC running the software. Bright garage light wrecks the picture. Ambient light can confuse the sensors. You close the overhead door and you leave it closed for every session.

A closed garage in Central Texas does not dump heat. There is no cross breeze. The space is a box with a thin door panel and a concrete slab that holds heat. Garages here sit well over 100 degrees in summer. Then the projector and the computer add still more heat into air that cannot leave.

A mini split puts a wall mounted indoor head in the bay and a condenser outside. The crew places that head around your swing, your screen, and your electronics. The closed door traps the heat

Golf simulators need a dark bay. Glare on the screen washes out the image. Extra light can bother the launch monitor. The practical result is a sealed garage for as long as you practice. Heat that might have drifted out an open door now stays in the room with you.

Central Texas garages sit well over 100 degrees in summer. Concrete floors and a large overhead door hold that heat. You feel it on the mat before the first swing. Once the door is down there is no useful exhaust. Cracking the door lets in daylight, which usually ruins the sim.

Heat the projector and the PC throw off

Projector lamps are heat sources. Making a bright image on the screen leaves waste heat in the housing and in the air around it. The unit usually hangs high, so that heat starts at the ceiling and then fills the bay. You cannot point a fan out the door without letting light back in.

The PC is a second heater. It runs the whole practice. A launch monitor adds a smaller load on top. Stack those on a garage that was already hot, and the air on the mat climbs while you hit. This is ordinary waste heat in a sealed room, not a mystery.

Swing clear of the indoor unit

A wall mounted head is a metal cabinet hanging in the room. A full swing, especially with a driver, needs space behind you and through the follow through. If the unit sits in that arc you will hit it or you will shorten the swing to protect it.

The crew looks at hitting direction, screen wall, side walls, and ceiling height before drilling. Common placement is high on a side wall, out of the backswing and out of the follow through. Airflow across the bay beats air straight at a light impact screen, which can flutter.

The head still needs open space around it so it can move air. Crowding it behind a net stand or under a soffit fights the unit and leaves an object near the club. Mark the swing first. Mark the holes second.

Walk the bay before anyone picks a wall

Hitting direction, screen, projector mount, PC, cage, and net stands eat wall space. The indoor unit needs a clear stretch of wall, studs, a line set path outside, and a way for condensate to drain. Gravity drain is the simple path when the wall and slab allow it.

The outdoor condenser needs airflow and a pad or wall brackets. The run should be as clean as the house allows. Sun on the garage, a single bay versus two cars, and that big overhead door all change the load. Someone has to stand in the space with those facts.

Any BTU figure you read for a generic garage is a general rule of thumb only. A site visit confirms what this bay needs, including the extra heat from the projector and the PC. The crew will not size the job from a phone photo of an empty stall.
