Ductless mini splits are popular in Central Texas homes because they cool and heat specific rooms without ductwork. The outdoor condenser is typically placed on a concrete pad or wall mount just outside the garage. The line set enters the garage through a small hole, then runs along the wall or ceiling to the indoor air handler. That means the crew needs access to both the inside and outside of the garage wall.
If the garage is cluttered, the crew might have to move heavy items themselves (which can slow things down) or ask you to do it on the spot. Avoiding that hassle is easy: clear a path from the garage door to the wall where the outdoor unit will go, and keep the area around that interior wall free of stored items. This also gives the installers room to set up their tools and work safely.
Start by removing anything leaning against the exterior wall where the outdoor unit will be placed. That includes lawn equipment, ladders, paint cans, and stacked storage bins. Next, clear a two foot wide pathway from the garage entry door to that wall. The crew will carry in the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, a roll of copper tubing, tools, and a vacuum pump. They need a clear route without tripping hazards.
For items you cannot move easily, like a workbench or heavy shelving, at least move anything on top or in front of the wall area. If the line set will run overhead along the garage ceiling, clear that area too so the installers can attach brackets and run the tubing. Store moved items in the driveway, a backyard, or another room for the day. The install usually takes four to six hours, so you can put everything back after the crew leaves.

Ensure the garage door opener works and that the door can fully open. If you have a manual door, confirm it slides smoothly. Clear the area just outside the garage where the outdoor unit will sit: move potted plants, trash cans, or vehicles away from that spot.
Pets and children should stay out of the garage during the install. The crew uses power tools and refrigerants that require caution. If you have a dog that guards the garage, please secure it in another part of the house. Finally, sweep the floor if it is dusty or has debris. A clean floor helps the installers see what they are doing and keeps the new equipment from getting dirty.
You only need to clear the area around the exterior wall where the outdoor unit will be mounted, plus a clear path from the garage entry door to that wall. If the line set will run along the ceiling, clear that ceiling area as well. The rest of the garage can stay as is, as long as it does not block the crew's work zone.
We understand garages in Central Texas often double as workshops and storage. If you cannot move heavy furniture or shelving, just let the crew know when they arrive. They can work around some obstacles, but it may add time to the install. If possible, clear the items you can move yourself, and the crew will handle the rest with care.
The crew is happy to move light items like boxes or small tools out of the way to create a work path. However, they are not a moving service and cannot be responsible for rearranging heavy furniture or fragile antiques. It is best to move anything you value or that is hard to lift before install day.
A typical ductless mini split installation takes four to six hours. The crew will be working in the garage and the exterior area for most of that time. You will not be able to park a car in the garage or use it for storage access during the install. Plan to keep the garage off limits until the crew finishes and you have seen the system running.
Low ceilings are common in older Austin area homes. The crew is used to working in tight spaces. Just make sure the path to the work area is clear of overhead obstructions like hanging bikes or storage racks. If the line set needs to go through a tight space, the installers will find a route that works.
