Cooling a Detached Garage Gym
A detached garage sits by itself. Every wall faces the sun. In a Texas summer that means heat coming from every direction at once.
A garage that is separate from the house has its own roof and four walls that are fully exposed to the sun. The roof gets hammered all day. The east wall gets morning sun. The south wall gets hammered from late morning through afternoon. The west wall gets the worst of it in the late afternoon and early evening. Even the north wall picks up reflected heat off the ground and nearby surfaces. By 4 PM in July every surface inside that garage is radiating heat back into the air. The temperature inside can hit well over 110 degrees on a bad afternoon.
If you train in that space you know the drill. The barbell gets too hot to touch. The floor is warm through your shoes. The air feels thick. A fan just moves hot air around. You cut sets short because the heat drains you before the work does.
A properly sized mini split changes that. It pulls heat out of the air and keeps dumping it outside. But installing one in a detached building is different from putting one in an attached garage. The electrical run is longer. The line set that carries refrigerant has to cross from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit, and the path matters. The building itself behaves differently because it is not tied to the thermal mass of the house.

An attached garage shares at least one wall with the house. That shared wall is shaded and stays cooler. A detached garage has no such luck. Every square foot of wall is cooking in the sun for part of the day.
The extra solar gain means the cooling load is higher than an attached garage of the same size. The mini split has to work harder to pull that heat out. During a site visit the crew measures each wall, notes its orientation, and looks at how much shade the building gets from trees or neighboring structures. That information goes into the sizing calculation.
A detached garage also has more roof area relative to its floor space. The roof is the biggest heat collector. The crew accounts for roof color, pitch, and insulation. Dark shingles on a low pitch with no soffit vents can add a lot of heat that the mini split has to overcome.

Running the Line Set and Power
A mini split has two main connections between the indoor and outdoor units: a line set that carries refrigerant and an electrical cable that powers the indoor unit. In a detached garage those runs are longer than in an attached space. The outdoor unit sits outside the garage. The indoor unit mounts on an interior wall. The line set has to go through the wall, across the yard or driveway, and up to the outdoor unit.
The crew buries the line set in conduit underground or runs it along the exterior wall in a protective cover. They keep the run as short as possible because longer runs reduce efficiency and require more refrigerant. They also run a dedicated electrical circuit from the main panel in the house out to the garage. That means trenching or overhead wiring. The crew coordinates with an electrician for the main panel work. They handle the line set and the connections themselves.
The outdoor unit needs clearance for airflow. On a detached garage the crew usually places it on the north side or east side where it gets some shade. They avoid placing it where the sun hits it directly in the afternoon because that makes the compressor work harder.

Why Detached Buildings Heat and Cool Faster
A detached garage has less thermal mass than a house. Thermal mass is the ability of materials like concrete and drywall to store heat. A house has a slab, interior walls, furniture, and a lot of drywall. All that mass soaks up heat during the day and releases it slowly at night. A garage has a concrete floor, maybe some drywall on the ceiling, and that is about it. The walls are often just studs with sheathing and siding. There is not much mass to absorb heat.
That means the air temperature inside a detached garage responds quickly to changes. When the sun comes up the air heats up fast. When the mini split turns on the air cools down fast. The space feels more responsive than a house. You walk in and within a few minutes the air is comfortable. But it also means that if the mini split shuts off the temperature rises quickly again.
The crew sets the thermostat to keep the space at a steady temperature during training hours, usually between 68 and 72 degrees. They avoid letting the space overheat during the day because the mini split then has to work hard to pull that heat back out. On days when the garage is not in use the crew recommends setting the thermostat higher, around 80 degrees, to save energy while still keeping the heat from building up too much.

Insulation and Air Sealing Matter Most
A mini split is only as good as the building it is installed in. If the garage has no insulation in the walls or ceiling, the mini split will run constantly and struggle to keep up. The crew checks for insulation during the site visit. They also look for air leaks around the garage door, windows, and any gaps in the siding.
The garage door is the biggest weak point. A standard metal garage door with no insulation lets heat pour in. The crew suggests adding a garage door insulation kit or replacing the door with an insulated one. They do not install those themselves but they can tell you what to look for. Sealing the gaps around the door with weatherstripping also helps.
If the garage has a finished ceiling with attic space above, the crew checks whether the attic is insulated. An uninsulated attic above the garage acts like a giant heat source. Insulating the attic floor or the ceiling of the garage makes a big difference in how well the mini split performs.

How long does it take to install a mini split in a detached garage?
Most installations take one to two days. The crew has to trench or run overhead wiring for the electrical circuit, pull the line set, mount the indoor and outdoor units, and then charge the system with refrigerant. A longer line set run or difficult trenching can add time.
Does the garage need to have existing electrical service for the mini split?

Sizing depends on the garage size, insulation, window area, and sun exposure. A two-car garage with no insulation and a metal door might need a larger unit than a well-insulated one.
