Cooling a Garage Batting Cage
A batting cage in a Texas garage turns into an oven by June. The netting traps air, the machines add heat, and a long tee session becomes a test of endurance.
Most garage batting cages share one problem: the netting kills airflow. A standard window unit or portable fan cannot push air through a dense net. The result is a dead zone where you stand and swing in still, hot air.
Pitching machines and practice balls add their own heat. A machine running for an hour puts out enough warmth to raise the temperature in a small garage by several degrees. Add in your own body heat from swinging, and the space becomes unusable fast.

Batting cage netting is a solid barrier to air movement. A mini split blows air in a straight line until it hits something. If that something is netting, the air stops. You need to position the indoor unit so its airflow goes over the top of the netting or along the side of it.
A common setup is to mount the indoor unit high on a side wall and aim the vanes to blow air across the top of the net. This lets the cool air drop down into the hitting area. You can also add a floor fan behind the net to pull air through the mesh. The fan should be set to low to avoid stirring up dust.

Pitching Machine Placement
A pitching machine runs on electricity and friction. The motor heats up, and the rubber wheels heat up from spinning against the ball. Over a long session, that heat adds to the room load. Keep the machine at least three feet away from the indoor unit and the thermostat. Position it so the air from the mini split does not blow directly onto the machine. That air needs to reach you, not heat up the machine. If the machine has a metal frame, it can radiate heat for a while after you turn it off.

Long Tee Sessions in Summer

Tandem and Deep Bay Garages
A tandem bay or a deep single bay holds more air than a standard one-car garage. The mini split must move that air over a longer distance to reach the hitting area. A standard 12,000 BTU unit may struggle if the garage is 25 feet deep or more.
