Mini Split for a Podcast Studio
A treated podcast room holds heat the way a closed cooler does. Lights, a laptop, an interface, and two people can cook that air while a microphone hears every fan and rattle you hoped to hide.
A Central Texas summer sits well over 100 degrees on a bad afternoon. You close the door on a small room so the mic does not hear the rest of the house. Acoustic panels, foam, and a heavy door keep sound in. They also keep heat in.
Gear adds load that a living room never sees. Camera lights, a laptop, an audio interface, powered monitors, a phone charging on the desk. Each one turns electricity into heat that has nowhere to go once the room is sealed.
A mini split puts an indoor head in that room and an outdoor condenser outside. No ductwork running through the house. The catch is the indoor fan. A condenser microphone will pick it up if the unit is running while you record.

Spare bedrooms, walk in closets, and garage corners become studios because they are already small. Once you add treatment, air does not leak the way it did. The room becomes a box. Heat that used to slip out under the door now stays put.
Outside air along the I-35 corridor from Waco down through Austin to New Braunfels can sit past 110 degrees on a bad afternoon. Walls and the attic still push heat inward. Lights and computers add more. A central vent was sized for a bedroom with the door open, not a sealed room full of electronics.

What the microphone hears
An indoor mini split head moves air across a coil and out through louvers. That air makes sound. In a living room you might not notice it. In a treated room with a condenser mic, the same sound sits under the voice as a hiss or a whoosh.
The head has to move enough air to carry heat out. Placement matters. A jet across the capsule or a hard wall that reflects back will show up on the track. A head high on the far wall, air mixing above the desk, keeps the stream off the talent. We look at the desk, the mic, and the walls when we walk the room.
Running it between takes
Many recordists cool the room, then shut the indoor unit off while the mics are live. Between takes you turn it back on. Heat from the gear starts climbing as soon as the fan stops. The room is small, so temperature moves once the head runs again.
You set the thermostat where you want to sit, often in the low 70s. Before a session you let it run. During tracking you kill the head so the mic hears you, not the louvers. Stop the fan so the microphone does not hear it, then dump the heat before the next segment. Long form with no breaks means the room will climb.
Where the indoor unit goes
The indoor unit wants a wall with a clear throw, not a dump on the talent or the desk. High on a side wall or opposite the microphone is the usual starting point. We do not aim the louver at the capsule. Power and the line set have to reach without chewing up the treatment you already hung.
The outdoor condenser sits on a pad or a wall bracket. It needs airflow around the coil. We keep it off a sleeping room window when the layout allows it. A short line set back to the indoor head matters. Shade helps the unit work less hard in a Texas summer.
Sizing is a rule of thumb
Square footage of a closet or spare room is only the start. Extra heat from lights, computers, and people has to be counted. A general rule of thumb gets you in the neighborhood. A site visit confirms the load, the sun on the wall, and whether the room is as tight as it looks.
We do not size from a phone photo. We stand in the room, look at the gear that stays on, and talk through how you record. Long sessions with the door shut are a different load than short takes with the system off between segments.

Will a mini split show up on my podcast recording?
The indoor fan makes sound when it moves air. Many people shut the head off while the mics are live and run it between takes. Can I leave the mini split running on low while I record?
