Cooling a Home Dojo

A garage dojo along I-35 sits under a roof that soaks up Texas sun. By afternoon the mats are warm and the air is too heavy for clean kata or hard rounds.

The room has two jobs. You need open floor for kata, forms, and weapons work. You also need air dry enough that foam mats do not stay clammy, gis dry between sessions, and wooden weapons do not take on moisture and change shape. Static holds and explosive bursts happen on the same floor, often in the same hour.

A ductless mini split pairs a wall or ceiling indoor unit with an outdoor condenser. A small line set carries refrigerant through the wall. Room air crosses a cold coil. Heat and moisture leave the space. Cooler, drier air comes back out. There are no ducts through the house. You condition the dojo without running the rest of the building.

How a garage dojo loads up with heat

A Central Texas garage takes sun on the roof all day. Metal roofs get especially hot. Shingles still push heat down into the rafters. Walls are often one layer of sheathing and siding with little insulation. If the big door faces west or south it acts like a solar collector.

Close that door and you trap building heat plus body heat and vapor. Kata is a steady load. Pad work or weapons drills spike it.

The slab is slow. It soaks heat through the day and gives it back at night. Mats on that slab feel it first. Bare feet pick up the warmth. Air near the ceiling is hotter, which you notice on a jump or a high extension with a weapon.

Humidity, mats, and stored weapons

Foam mats trap moisture on the underside if the room stays damp. You can wipe the top and still have a clammy layer against the concrete. Gis and belts hung in humid air stay wet longer. Wooden weapons take on water, which can swell the wood and loosen wraps.

Leather gets tacky. Metal bits on bags or some weapons can show rust if the air never dries. This is just water finding materials that hold it. Gear storage in a garage dojo is part of the humidity problem, not a separate one.

When a mini split runs, the indoor coil is cold. Moisture condenses on that coil and drains outside. Air leaving the unit is cooler and holds less water. You still hang gis and stand mats on edge after class.

Slow forms and explosive rounds in one room

Kata and forms ask for control and breath. A blast of cold air in the face during a long stance is a distraction. You want the space comfortable without a jet aimed at the spot where you plant your feet.

Explosive work is different. Heart rate jumps. Sweat dumps into the room in a few minutes. You want more air movement then, and you want the coil taking that load as it shows up.

Most indoor heads have several fan speeds and a louver you can swing or lock. Lower fan for slow work. Higher fan when people are moving hard. Setpoint is yours. Many people land somewhere between the mid 60s and the high 70s depending on the session.

The equipment removes heat and moisture as you add them. How the room feels depends on capacity, placement, and fan speed.

Swing lanes, throw, and condensate

A staff, a sword, or a wide empty hand form uses more of the floor than a weight rack. The indoor unit has to sit high and out of those lanes. A high wall mount on a side that is not in the swing path, or a unit on the ceiling, are the usual answers.

Throw is how far the air travels before it drops. You want coverage across the mats and into the corner where gear is stacked, without a constant draft in the middle of a form. The crew walks the floor with you and notes where you actually stand and move.

Outside, the condenser needs airflow and a level pad or brackets. Line set length and rise have limits, so the run is measured on site. Condensate cannot drip on the mats. Gravity drain is simplest. A pump is used when gravity will not work.

Sizing is a rule of thumb until a visit

A rough starting point is square footage of the training floor, plus extra load for sun, weak insulation, ceiling height, and how many people work in the room. That number is a sketch. It is not a promise of a certain size. A site visit confirms it.

Someone stands in the room, looks at glass and door area, notes how the slab and walls behave, asks how many people train and for how long, and sees where gear is stored. Capacity is then matched to that load.

Picking a unit from a phone description of a two car garage is how the match goes wrong. Solo days and group days are different. The visit ties the equipment to the actual heat and moisture in that space.

Questions People Ask

Can a mini split cool only the dojo without running the house system?

The indoor unit serves that room alone. The house system stays off. You set the dojo control for training, often between 65 and 75 degrees, and leave the rest of the building alone. Line set and power are dedicated to that head.

Where do you put the indoor unit so it does not hit someone doing weapons work?

High on a side wall or on the ceiling, clear of staff and sword lanes and of your kata stance. The crew walks the mat with you, notes full extension, and picks a mount with throw across the floor. Condensate is planned so nothing drips on the mats.

Will it dry the air enough for mats and wooden weapons?

While it runs, water condenses on the coil and drains outside, so room air holds less moisture. Mats, gis, and wood then have a better chance to dry between sessions. You still wipe mats and hang gis. The unit is not a substitute for gear care.

How do you size it if I train alone some days and with a group on others?

People add heat and moisture. A visit looks at solo days and group days. Capacity is chosen to cover heavier sessions without a wild mismatch on light days. Fan speed and a setpoint between 60 and 80 degrees give day to day control.

Can I open the garage door during a session and still cool the room?

An open door dumps cooled air and brings in heat and humidity. The unit keeps running but it is not built to condition the outdoors. Closed door training is what it is for. If classes mix indoor and outdoor work, say so on the visit.
