Cooling a Garage Boxing Gym
A garage boxing gym in Central Texas is a oven between June and September. The heavy bag hangs from the ceiling, the double end bag bounces, and after a few rounds the air is thick with sweat and dust.
You train in a closed garage because that is where the space is. The door stays down to keep the heat out but it traps the heat from your body and the bags. By the third round you are breathing air that feels like it has been used before.
A mini split is the right tool for this job. It does not waste floor space. It hangs on the wall or mounts on the ceiling. It blows cold air directly into the room where you are moving and sweating.
But a garage boxing gym has special demands. The head unit has to live in the same room as a swinging heavy bag. The air has to handle high humidity from sweat. The system has to keep up with multiple rounds of intense work without freezing up or blowing weak air.

A heavy bag moves in a circle. A double end bag snaps unpredictably. If the indoor unit is mounted in the path of either bag, you will hit it. That damages the unit and interrupts your workout.
The crew measures the bag swing radius before picking a wall location. They look at the ceiling joists for the mounting bracket. They aim for a spot that is out of the bag arc but still in the middle of the room enough to circulate air to all corners.

How to size a mini split for a boxing gym

Will a mini split get damaged by sweat in the air?
The indoor unit is sealed and designed for humid environments. The evaporator coil gets wet during operation and that is normal. The condensate drain carries the moisture away. As long as the drain is clear and the filter is clean, sweat in the air will not hurt the unit. Wipe down the outside occasionally.
Can I hang a heavy bag from the same ceiling joist that holds the mini split?
No. The mini split bracket needs a solid mount and the bag adds dynamic load. They should not share the same joist. The crew separates the mounting points by at least two feet. The bag needs its own support beam or a separate ceiling anchor.
How do I keep the air from getting stale during a long workout?
A mini split recirculates indoor air. It does not bring in outside air. To keep the air fresh, crack the garage door an inch or install a small exhaust fan if allowed. The crew can advise on a simple vent option that works with the cooling system.
Does the unit need to be on a separate circuit from my garage lights and outlets?
Yes, most mini splits need their own dedicated circuit. The electrical load from a 240V system can trip a shared breaker if you have lights, a fan, and a radio running. The crew will run a new line from the panel to the disconnect near the outdoor unit.
What about the heat from the outdoor unit in the Texas summer?
The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the garage. It releases heat into the air. In Central Texas the outdoor temperature can be well over 100 degrees. The unit is designed to operate in that range. Keep the condenser coil clean and give it at least two feet of clearance on all sides.
