Line Set Routing in a Garage

The copper line set is the lifeline of your mini split. Getting it from the outdoor unit to the indoor head is a straight mechanical job that needs to be done right the first time.

In a Central Texas garage, the line set runs from the outdoor unit sitting on a concrete pad or wall bracket, through the wall, and up to the indoor air handler. The whole thing is covered by a slim white channel called a line hide that keeps the copper clean and out of sight.

Where the copper goes through the wall

The penetration through the garage wall is a round hole about three inches across. The crew drills from inside to outside at a slight downward angle so water cannot run back into the garage. They use a core bit to get a clean hole through brick, siding or stucco.

Inside the hole, they insert a plastic sleeve to protect the copper from sharp edges and to seal out insects. The line set passes through that sleeve, and the gap is filled with foam or caulk. No light gets through. No air gets through.

Running the line set along the exterior wall

Once the copper is outside, it runs down the wall to the outdoor unit. The crew keeps the run as short as possible, usually no more than a few feet. They strap the line set to the wall with metal or plastic clips every couple of feet.
