Where the Outdoor Unit Goes

The indoor head pulls heat out of the garage. The outdoor unit dumps that heat into the yard. Put the condenser where air can move, water can leave, and you can still mow.

A garage gym along I-35 from Waco through Austin to New Braunfels takes the same beating as the rest of the property. The slab holds heat. The door throws it back at you. On a bad afternoon the garage can sit well over 100 degrees, past 110 degrees. You cannot get real work done in that. The indoor head is on the wall.

The condenser moves heat from the garage into outdoor air that is already hot. It needs a clean intake across the coil and a path for the fan to throw discharge away from the cabinet. Grass, a fence, a parked trailer, or a stack of plates can starve that path. Then the compressor runs in a pocket of even hotter air.

We walk the side yard and the back of the garage with you. Pad or wall bracket. We look at sun, slope, fence distance, and the way you mow. The line set still has to reach the indoor head. We do not pick a spot that fights how you use the yard.

Side yard or the back of the garage

Most of these condensers land in the side yard or against the back wall. A side strip between the garage and the fence keeps the copper run short if the indoor head is on that wall. You already use that path to the gate. The unit can live there if the strip is wide enough for air to move and for a mower to pass.

The back wall keeps the condenser off the driveway and off the street side. Some backs open onto an alley. Some sit close to a wood fence. We do not jam the cabinet into a corner that recirculates hot discharge. If the indoor head has to sit on the back wall, the outdoor unit still needs room on the intake and above the fan.

On a pad or on a wall bracket

A pad is a level base on the ground. It keeps the condenser flat and out of mud. Grass and standing water at the bottom of the coil are a problem. The soil under the pad has to hold the weight without sinking after rain.

A wall bracket hangs the unit off the garage. That lifts it above splash and above the string trimmer. It also frees the walking lane in a tight side yard. The wall has to carry the weight. We still need to reach the service valves, and the fan should not blow straight into siding at close range.

Clearance so air can move across the coil

Air has to enter the coil and leave past the fan. If a fence, a shed, or a lumber stack sits tight to the intake, the unit eats its own hot discharge. That is a placement problem. We leave space on the sides and above the fan so the condenser is not sitting in a hot box it created.

You also need room to rinse the fins. Dust, cottonwood, and grass clippings load a coil that nobody can reach. A unit stuffed in a nook never gets a hose.

Sun on the condenser

West sun in Central Texas loads a condenser that sits in the open. The air around the cabinet runs hotter with no break from afternoon sun. The shadow of the garage, a north or east wall, or a bit of building shade takes some of that off the coil. We still will not hide the unit under a low deck or a solid hood that traps discharge air.

Trees cut sun and drop mess. Shade helps. Leaves and sap in the fins do not. We look at what hangs over the spot in summer, not how the yard looks in January.

Drainage, fence lines, and mowing around it

Water has to leave the pad. A low spot that holds rain after a storm is a poor place for a compressor. We look for slope away from the foundation. Rain that hits the outdoor unit should sheet off, not sit against the garage slab. The indoor condensate is a separate drain.

Fence lines squeeze clearance. A privacy fence tight to the cabinet blocks intake. Leave a gap you can walk. Solid boards are harder on airflow than open slats. Sliding the unit a few feet along the wall beats jamming it in a pretty corner that cannot breathe.

You will mow this yard for years. Set the condenser where a deck and a string trimmer can pass without hitting the line set, the disconnect, or the fins. Keep weeds out of the coil. Packed clippings choke airflow the same way a fence does.

Questions People Ask

Can the outdoor unit sit on the roof of the garage?

The usual spots are the side yard or the back wall, on a pad or a wall bracket. We work at grade and on the wall so you can reach the unit with a hose. Walk the yard with us and we will point to the pad or the wall that fits.

How close can the condenser sit to my fence?

Close enough that you still get air on the intake side and you can still reach the service valves and rinse the coil. Tight against a solid privacy fence is a bad idea because the unit will pull hot air back in. Open slat fences are easier on airflow than solid boards. We would rather shift the cabinet a few feet than leave it jammed in the corner.

Does the outdoor unit need to be in the shade?

Full afternoon sun, especially on a west wall, puts extra heat around the cabinet. Building shade or a north or east exposure takes some of that load off. Shade from a tree can help, but leaves in the fins hurt. Do not box the unit under a solid cover or a low deck. The fan still has to throw heat away, not into a trap.

Will the outdoor unit sit in water after a rain?

We look for a spot that drains. A pad in a puddle is a mistake. If the side yard holds water, a wall bracket lifts the condenser off grade so the coil is not sitting in splash. Slope should carry rain away from the garage slab, not toward it. Indoor condensate is piped separately and is not the same as rain at the outdoor unit.

Can I hide the condenser with a screen or a cover?

A solid screen that blocks the intake or the fan discharge is a problem. The unit has to move air or it cooks itself. If you want it less visible, placing it on the back wall or deeper in the side yard usually does more than a box around the cabinet. Leave room to walk, rinse the coil, and mow. Looks come after airflow.
