The slot: after drywall, before paint
Rough electrical and insulation come first. Drywall closes the walls. The indoor unit mounts on finished drywall, before paint.
Paint, flooring, and trim follow the install. The walkthrough is last. Slot it there and you do not recut board or paint around a head that was not there.

What breaks when you slot it too early
If the indoor unit goes on open studs, drywall has to work around it. The head gets coated, dinged, or boxed in. Line sets left in the bay get covered with no chase and no cover path.
Insulation crews will bury a drain left loose in the bay. You then open finished walls to find it. An outdoor unit set before final grade gets moved twice.
What breaks when you slot it too late
After paint, you cut a finished wall for the line set and the head. Touch-up never matches. Flooring then works around a pad and a drip path you could have set on subfloor.
Trim that closes a chase you still need gets pulled. At walkthrough the owner sees a cut, a patch, and a cover that was not on the sheet. Slot the unit before paint so that conversation does not happen.
What each trade leaves for the install
Electrical leaves a circuit path and a disconnect location. Circuit size is confirmed at the site walk. Do not share that run with lighting or receptacles.
Insulation leaves the chase open and the penetration bay unfaced. Drywall hangs the board, muds, and sands. Leave the indoor wall clear of furniture and staging. Paint, flooring, and trim stay off the head location, the cover path, and the outdoor pad.
