Most she sheds along the I-35 corridor are one room with thin walls and a roof that soaks up sun from breakfast until dark. A fan just moves the hot air around.
A she shed is a small detached building in the backyard used as a craft room, a quiet office, or a retreat. In Central Texas it sits in open sun. East wall in the morning, west wall in the afternoon, roof all day. There is often little insulation. The door and windows are not built like a house.
By early afternoon the interior can climb well over 100 degrees. On a bad afternoon it can push past 110 degrees. You walk out after twenty minutes. A box fan in the window pulls in more heat and humidity. A window unit needs a square opening that many sheds do not have, and it dumps condensate wherever it sits.
A mini split puts one indoor head on a wall inside the shed and a small outdoor unit just outside. Refrigerant lines and a control cable connect the two. One indoor head serves the whole building because the room is a single open volume. The outdoor unit needs a dedicated electrical circuit. On a detached shed that usually means a new run from the house panel out to the building.

A she shed is not a garage and it is not a house. Floor area is often about the size of a large bedroom, sometimes smaller. That small volume is straightforward to condition in a well insulated interior room. Out in the yard the envelope works against you.
The walls may be a single layer of wood or metal. The roof is a thin assembly with little or no attic. Afternoon sun hits the west wall and the roof at the same time. Heat soaks through and stays in the room after the sun drops. Humidity from the yard comes with it.
Sizing follows a general rule of thumb based on volume, sun, insulation, and how tight the building is. A site visit confirms the match. Two sheds of the same size can behave very differently if one has a west window and no insulation and the other sits in shade with batt in the walls.

One indoor head for the whole building
Because a she shed is almost always a single open room, one wall mounted head is the usual layout. The indoor unit sits high on a wall, out of the way of a work table or a daybed. Supply air washes across the room. There are no ducts and no second zone.
Placement matters in a small room. We keep the head off the wall that gets the worst sun if we can. We keep it clear of the door swing and of any shelf that would block the discharge. In a tight craft room the gable wall is a common spot. In a small office the wall opposite the desk keeps air off papers. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or a wall bracket nearby. The line set stays on that one building. This is its own small system, not a tie in to the house.
Getting power from the house to the shed
A mini split outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit and a disconnect within sight of the equipment. Many she sheds were wired for a light and an outlet, nothing more. That existing circuit will not carry the outdoor unit.
The usual path is a new run from the house panel, out through the yard, and into a disconnect at the shed. The run can go underground in conduit or overhead if the site already has an overhead feed. We look at the panel, the path, and where the disconnect can sit before anyone cuts a trench.
If the shed already has a subpanel with spare capacity, that can change the picture. If it does not, the house panel is the source. We do not guess at breaker space from the sidewalk. We open the panel and look.
Line set, condensate, and the outdoor unit
The copper line set, the communication wire, and the condensate drain leave the indoor head and go to the exterior. In a she shed the wall is thin, so the penetration is simple. The drain has to discharge where water will not stain a patio or pool against the siding.
Condensate is real in Central Texas. The indoor coil pulls moisture out of the air while it runs. A gravity drain to a splash block is the simple version. If the head sits on a wall with no downhill path, a small condensate pump can lift it. We decide that on site based on wall height and grade.
The outdoor unit wants airflow around the coil and a level pad or a solid bracket. Close to the shed keeps the line set short. Not so close that discharge air hits the wall. Not under a low eave that traps heat. Shade on the north side of the shed is helpful. We set the unit where access and the line set path make sense.

Can one mini split cool a whole she shed?

What happens to the water the unit pulls out of the air?
The indoor coil condenses moisture as it cools. That water leaves through a drain line. If grade allows, the drain runs downhill to a splash block. If the only good wall has no downhill path, a condensate pump lifts the water. Humidity here makes this a real part of the job.
Can I heat the she shed in winter with the same unit?
A mini split can run in heat mode from the same indoor head. On a cold night the outdoor unit sits outside and the head warms the room. We still size from the cooling load on a sun baked roof, because that is the harder condition here, and a site visit confirms the match.
